Q: What are they looking for in a dui blood test, alcohol or drugs?

A: The answer is that it depends. If they smelled alcohol on you the first thing they will likely test for is alcohol. If the test comes back with a high alcohol level it is unlikely they will test for anything else. If it comes back with little or no alcohol they will likely test for a broad range of drugs, including prescription, non-prescription and illegal drugs. If this is a serious felony they will likely test for everything, but in different tests.

The reason they do not test for drugs and alcohol all at once is that two different tests are used. Testing for alcohol used headspace gas chromatography. Testing for most drugs uses liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Testing for marijuana (THC) uses either gas or liquid chromatography together with mass spectrometry.
